Kawaguchi Asama Jinja is a Shrine that is part of the long tradition of Fuji faith, As well as an architectural treasure in itself, registered as a world heritage site. The shrine was built in the year 864 after the irruption of mount Fuji, and the shrine was dedicated to appeasing and calming the spirit of Mount Fuji. On the grounds of the shrine are found the living seven sacred cedar trees, which are more than 1200 years old. Not far from the shrine on the path towards Mitsutoge is a sacred Waterfall called Haha no Shirataki, Where mini pilgrims in the Fuji faith would do Misogi waterfall training to purify themselves before they made the ascent to the summit of Mount Fuji. Other stories associated with this shrine include one dating back 2200 years, to when the Emperor of the Chinese Qin Dynasty sent a Yamabushi Priest named Jofuku to JAPAN in search of and elixir for eternal life. The Kawaguchi Asama Shrine pays homage to this, As it was held to be Jofuku’s Final destination, at the Mt Fuji. Jofuku himself settled in this region, conveying many learnings and technologies to the Japanese villagers at the time including weaving techniques. Jofuku’s gravestone is also located in this area.
